ODA's £4bn construction boost for smaller firms
28 January 2009
The Olympic Delivery Authority is set to let £4 billion-worth of construction work over the next 18 months, boosting work for small and medium-sized businesses across the UK.
ODA chairman John Armitt said the majority of the work would be carried out in the next year, mainly through CompeteFor supplying tier one contractors.
He added: "Even if SMEs don't win work on the Olympics, going through the process of registering with CompeteFor will equip them to win further work in the public sector."
Last November, the London Development Agency signalled its intention to make all public sector contracts in the capital available through CompeteFor.
Meanwhile, negotiations for the contract to build the media centre on the Olympic park are continuing.
The job, worth up to £400 million, has a Carillion/Igloo joint venture as its preferred bidder. But Mr Armitt stressed that the contract would not be signed until the budget was finalised.
He said: "The media centre will be wholly publicly funded. So we're looking at getting the costs down as much as we can. "We are conscious that we need to provide a permanent building for Hackney. As a business space in legacy, it has the biggest potential to create jobs.
"We want to create a flexible base building, and we're refining the design for that. We're also looking at other places to locate elements."
Construction on the building, which is located on the western side of the park, must start in late spring. Designs for the £1 billion Olympic Village have been finalised, with 11 buildings to house 1,700 beds during the Games. The original 30-storey blocks have been abandoned in favour of eight to ten storey towers, allowing enough space for no more than two athletes per room.
During the Games the apartments will have no kitchens, with the space acting as a further bedroom. Speaking about the funding for the village Mr Armitt said: "We have funding in place until March and we are still working on getting the best deal after that. "It is most probable that we will find a private deal as banks and housing associations are interested."
